Women in College Project Information
Funded by a grant from WomenGive of United Way
The goal of the Women in College Project (WCP) is to provide a pathway toward self-sufficiency for single mothers without a high school diploma. Participants will work toward completing a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma and start taking a college class at FRCC at the same time. Financial and educational support will include free HSE classes, free HSE exam, tuition and fees for one 3-credit class per semester, textbooks and academic supplies, childcare scholarships, regular meetings with FRCC’s Single Parent Advisor, mentoring with the CAL Navigator, one hour per week of one-on-one academic tutoring, and access to the campus foodbank. Participants may enroll in up to one course per semester while finishing their HSE, or they may work solely on the HSE in one semester and then begin college coursework the following semester.
- Six of FRCC’s certificate programs that may be attractive to participants are Automotive Technology, Computer Information Systems, Early Childhood Education, Certified Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy, and Welding Technology. These programs can lead to employment in Northern Colorado that pays a sustainable wage, and they require from 5-13 credits to complete. Enrolling in courses outside these six certificate programs is allowed but must be approved by The Learning Source Program Director.
To be eligible for the Women in College Project, participants must meet the following criteria:
- Single mother not living with a partner
- Resident of Larimer County eligible for in-state tuition
- Income at or below 225% of Federal Poverty Line - see Financial Eligibility Criteria below
- No high school diploma or equivalency
- TABE pre-test scores are a minimum of 576 on the Reading and 537 on the Math
